My journey into Bharatnatyam began when I was in second grade. I still remember my first day of class, I was so excited and nervous. As I stepped in through the door, seeing miss’s smiling face, and welcoming gestures, made me comfortable and relieved. That day was one of the best days in my life. Back then even simple things like maintaining balance, precise hand gestures and stamina seemed very challenging. Through miss’s guidance and practice, things began to seem easier. Bharatnatyam taught me the most important lessons of life, “Never give up”, expressing through gestures, confidence and concentration.
As I grew-up Bharatnatyam became an important part of my life. It shaped my personality, my way of thinking and became a part of my routine. Balancing academics along with dance was challenging yet fulfilling experience. This taught me to work better under pressure. Because of Bharatnatyam I got the confidence to perform on stage in front of large crowds. The rehearsals before stage shows were exciting and fun. Endless practice, full – run through, excitement of performing on stage, wearing new costumes, makeup and managing jewellery. Through Bharatanatyam I found some great friends who stood by me. Attending the class with them was fun. I miss all the after-class chit-chatting, marking the adavus in water-break and learning whatever I missed.
Over the years, Bharatanatyam became that safe place which could let me escape through academic stress. Now, after completing my Master Diploma, when I look behind, I feel quite nostalgic, proud and grateful. A beautiful eleven-year journey of Bharatanatyam, which shaped my passion, love for this art form and dedication. For me, Bharatanatyam is not just dance, its passion, it’s a part of me.
